DIN17175 St35.8 Boiler Pipe: A Reliable Choice for Low-to-Medium Pressure Boiler Systems
DIN17175 St35.8 is a carbon steel boiler pipe grade specified by the German Industrial Standard (DIN), specifically engineered for conveying steam and hot water in low-to-medium pressure boiler systems. A key feature of St35.8 is its balanced chemical composition: it contains 0.17-0.24% carbon, 0.30-0.60% manganese, ≤0.045% phosphorus, and ≤0.045% sulfur. This composition gives it moderate mechanical properties, with a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and tensile strength ranging from 360-480 MPa—ideal for withstanding the pressure and temperature fluctuations common in non-high-pressure boiler operations. Additionally, St35.8 undergoes strict heat treatment (usually normalizing) to refine its microstructure, ensuring uniform ductility and preventing brittle fracture under thermal stress.
The primary role of St35.8 is to act as a cost-effective, durable conduit for heat transfer fluids (steam or hot water) in boiler systems where pressure does not exceed 5.3 MPa and temperature stays below 450°C. Its advantages lie in its excellent weldability and formability: it can be easily welded using standard arc welding techniques without requiring complex pre-heat or post-weld heat treatment, reducing installation time and labor costs. It also has good thermal conductivity, enabling efficient heat transfer between the boiler and connected equipment. Compared to higher-strength boiler pipes, St35.8 is more economical, making it a preferred choice for budget-conscious projects without compromising on basic performance.
In terms of application scope, St35.8 is widely used in industrial boilers for small to medium-sized manufacturing facilities, such as food processing plants, textile mills, and chemical factories, where low-to-medium pressure steam is sufficient for production processes. It is also suitable for heating systems in commercial buildings (e.g., hotels, shopping malls) and residential complexes, where it conveys hot water safely. Additionally, St35.8 finds use in auxiliary boiler systems of ships and locomotives, as it can withstand the moderate pressure demands of on-board heating and power generation.
