About Cr and Mo in 15CrMo Steel
15CrMo steel belongs to pearlitic heat-resistant steel. It is mainly composed of chromium and molybdenum alloying elements. The alloying element chromium can form a dense oxide film to improve the oxidation resistance of 15CrMo steel, and prevent graphitization.
Molybdenum is a strengthening element in 15CrMo steel, and its ability to form carbides is weaker than that of chromium. Molybdenum preferentially dissolves into solid solution and strengthens solid solution. Molybdenum also has the effect of preventing graphitization, so it should be added to 15CrMo steel at the same time as chromium to prevent graphitization of carbon.
The melting point of molybdenum is as high as 2625°C. After solid solution, the recrystallization temperature of 15CrMo steel can be increased, and the high temperature strength and creep resistance of 15CrMo steel can be effectively improved. Molybdenum can reduce the hot brittleness of 15CrMo steel, and can also improve the corrosion resistance of 15CrMo steel.
