Steel consumption in the Middle East and North Africa will reach 58.5 million tons next year

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA), excluding Iran, will see steel consumption drop by 7% to 40 million tons in 2019 and rebound by 2.5% to 41 million tons in 2020, the Arab Iron and Steel Union (AISU) said in a report.

In addition, according to the data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Iran's steel output in 2018 was 25 million tons, an increase of 18% year on year; the apparent consumption was 17.5 million tons, and the export volume was 9.2 million tons, accounting for 37% of the output. According to this calculation, if Iran's apparent consumption remains at the level of 2018 this year and next year, the consumption of steel in the Middle East and North Africa is expected to reach 58.5 million tons next year.
