The EU wants to resume trade talks with the US on steel and aluminium tariffs

Posted:2020-01-09 15:32:24

Irishman Phil Hogan, the EU's new trade commissioner, said he would work to restore EU / US trade relations on a number of controversial issues, with steel and aluminium tariffs an important issue in his first meeting with US trade representatives in January 2020.

In mid-2018, the Trump government imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Europe. Airbus AIR. PA, a European aircraft maker, has taken the same action on $7.5 billion worth of EU products, amid controversy over subsidies. At the same time, it is forbidden to carry out digital service tax in France.

Phil Hogan said that we agreed to meet in Washington in mid January to discuss a long list of issues that have strained relations between the EU and the US. Unless we agree on a common trade agenda, there is no point in discussing the details of resolving trade disputes.

The threat of US tariffs is in response to a digital tax in Europe, which will try to restart EU / US trade relations on Tariffs such as steel and aluminum.
