A588 Grade A is a high‑strength, low‑alloy structural steel plate designed for enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. The grade forms a stable protective oxide layer (“patina”) when exposed to outdoor environments, significantly reducing corrosion rates compared with carbon steel. It is widely used in bridges, building structures, transmission towers, and outdoor engineering components requiring long‑term durability without painting.

Chemical Composition (ASTM A588/A588M)

Carbon: ≤ 0.19%
Manganese: 0.80–1.25%
Silicon: 0.15–0.50%
Phosphorus: ≤ 0.04%
Sulfur: ≤ 0.05%
Copper: 0.20–0.40%
Chromium: 0.40–0.65%
Nickel: 0.40% max
Vanadium: 0.02–0.10%

The Cu‑Cr‑Ni‑V alloy system provides the characteristic weathering performance and structural strength.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 485–620 MPa
Yield Strength: ≥ 345 MPa
Elongation:
- ≥ 18% (200 mm gauge length)
- ≥ 21% (50 mm gauge length)

These properties make A588 Grade A suitable for outdoor structures requiring long service life and reduced maintenance.
